Glossary

The lore of Akihabara Dennō Gumi draws heavily from alchemy, an ancient protoscientific philosophy focused on material and spiritual transformation. It also incorporates elements of Greek mythology, Judeo-Christian concepts, and Rosicrucianism, an esoteric movement influenced by alchemical principles and aimed at fostering intellectual and spiritual growth. Many of the series’ concepts and language are inspired by these real-world traditions, though there are also some unique ideas thrown in for good measure.

This glossary page aims to clarify and explain the various terms used throughout the series specifically in the context of Akihabara Dennō Gumi. Please note that the explanations of term origins here are brief and intended only as basic introductions.

Additional terms

Several of the audio CDs from Akihabara Dennō Gumi have titles inspired by alchemy. Here are a few of those titles  explored for those interested in further alchemical references from the series.

TermWhere usedOrigin
AzothName of the second Akihabara Dennō Gumi original soundtrack CD.In alchemy, Azoth is a mystical agent of transformation, often considered a universal remedy. Believed to be the fundamental essence that permeates all matter, Azoth holds the power of transmutation. This agent, due to its solvent nature, is now considered an early interpretation of the element mercury.
RebisName of the first Akihabara Dennō Gumi original soundtrack CD.Rebis, in alchemy, represents the union of opposing qualities. The term is derived from the Latin "res bina" meaning "double matter." The image associated with this state, depicting a unified humanoid with both male and female traits, first appeared in Azoth of the Philosophers.
RubificationName of the Akihabara Dennō Gumi character image album CD.In alchemy, "rubification" refers to the fourth and final stage in the creation of the philosopher's stone, where the white material from the albification process turns red. This colour change represents not just material transformation but the attainment of spiritual enlightenment.

Further reading

If these terms or the real-world study of Rosicrucian concepts interests you then the best place to start is probably The Rosicrucian Trilogy which features modern translations of the three core documents of the momvement: Fama Fraternitatis, Confessio Fraternitatis, and The Chemical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreuz. The first book I read about Rosicrucianism after watching Akihabara Dennō Gumi as a tween was The Rosicrucians: The History, Mythology, and Rituals of an Esoteric Order by Christopher McIntosh, which offers a solid introduction to the order and its history. I would also recommend The Rosicrucian Enlightenment by Frances Yates as another insightful read.

While both alchemy and Rosicrucianism still have modern followers, the portrayal in Akihabara Dennō Gumi is fictional and not a direct representation of these movements in any way.
